With descriptions and pen-and-ink drawings of our most common wildlife species, The Outdoor World of the Sacramento Region field guide has long been a close companion for nature lovers. Now, the American River Natural History Association has published an updated edition that for the first time is in full color.
The new edition is a successor to a volume inspired half a century ago by teacher-environmentalist Effie Yeaw. It profiles more than 600 local plants, birds, mammals, insects, fish, reptiles and amphibians. It also portrays regional landforms, weather and climate, and native peoples.
“I love this book!" said Tim Nosal, California Department of Fish and Game environmental scientist. "I've been using ‘The Outdoor World’ to explore and understand the Sacramento Region for more than 20 years.
The informative text and the careful illustrations --- now in full color -- are helpful to both the casual observer as well as the resource professional. "
Nosal was one of a dozen university and other authorities who updated more than 100 common and scientific names and expanded descriptions of species in which they specialized. For instance, field ornithologist/teacher/photographer Ed Harper wrote that "Canada Geese form strong pair bonds and the males often stand guard while the female incubates eggs . . . When the eggs hatch, both parents watch over and protect their precocial young."
Longtime ARNHA artist Molly Keller hand-colored the 350 drawings that she, Jo Glasson Smith, and Erin O'Toole had previously created, and designed the new front and back covers.
This thirteenth edition was edited by Peter J. Hayes, Peggy Kraus-Kennedy and Molly Keller. The 240 page soft-cover volume is available for $16.95. The hard-cover edition costs $24.95. You can make your purchase online above.
