Jian Wang

About the Artist
“I admire the people working to protect the natural beauty of the American River because it has inspired me to create a great number of paintings which have been shown throughout the country. This is the first time I have made giclees so that I can share my artwork with you and show my own appreciation of the American River Natural History Association's efforts.”   -- Jian Wang, January 2006

Jian Wang was born in Dalian, China, in 1958.  Drawn to art from an early age, Wang was first exposed to the Russian Social Realism popular in China, but also spent time studying Rembrandt and Michelangelo.

Wang earned his B.S. in Engineering at the Dalian Railway Institute, where he later taught for four years. It was here that he met Marjorie Francisco, a retired art teacher from Sacramento. Impressed by his work, Marjorie sponsored Wang's journey to the United States.  Arriving in Sacramento in 1986,  he took art courses at Sacramento City College from Fred Dalkey,  then studied under Wayne Thiebaud, Manuel Neri, Roland Peterson, and David Hollowell at the University of California, Davis.  He received his M.A. in 1994 from California State University, Sacramento under the tutelage of Oliver Jackson.

Wang believes that artists should not specialize, but make very broad studies of life and history. For him the process of creation is as important as the product created.  He is equally skilled at landscape, still life and the human figure.

The artist makes his home in Carmichael near the American River.

Jian Wang DVD

Jian Wang Full Circle aired on public channel KVIE in September 2006.  It chronicles Wang's hardship and triumphs on his journey to recognition as a major international artist.

During the Cultural Revolution in China, Jian Wang had few opportunities to pursue his love of art.  Through determination -- and a bit of luck -- he came to Sacramento and studied with famed painter Wayne Thiebaud.  Today Jian's work is on exhibit around the world.  Trace his journey and follow his return to China.
